Custody & risk
- If the issuer disappearsWhile marketed as non-custodial, the MPC model creates a dependency on COCA's servers to co-sign transactions. If the company disappears, funds may be inaccessible as the recovery phrase only works within the COCA app.
- Counterparty riskVendor lock-in risk - if COCA's servers are offline or company shuts down, Recovery Phrase alone will not let users restore and spend funds in another wallet
- Counterparty riskNot fully non-custodial as advertised - users cannot transact without COCA's servers co-signing
- Counterparty riskFiat loaded on card is held by Wirex under e-money safeguarding rules and is not directly recoverable without the issuer
The COCA wallet uses a Multi-Party Computation (MPC) security model where private keys are split. One key share is stored on the user's device and another on COCA's servers. This means users cannot transact without COCA's participation, and COCA cannot spend funds without the user's biometric approval. Wallet recovery does not use a traditional seed phrase and is tied to the user's account and biometrics.
