Custody & risk
- If the issuer disappearsIf the provider disappears, users retain access to their non-custodial wallet assets but may lose funds held in the custodial card account. Card funds are not covered by government deposit insurance.
- Regulatory riskBasedApp withdrew its Payment Services Act (PSA) license application with the Monetary Authority of Singapore and subsequently exited the Singapore card services market
- Counterparty riskCard funds are held in segregated custodial accounts - if provider disappears, users may lose access to card funds (though wallet assets remain accessible)
- Market riskSingapore market exit created disruption for local users who were required to close cards and withdraw funds within tight deadlines
BasedApp uses a hybrid model. The main wallet is non-custodial where users control their private keys. For spending, funds are moved to a segregated, custodial card account managed by the platform and secured by Fireblocks.
